In
the recent times there has been a lot of awareness of the
ecology around us. I get to see and hear many of us being
genuinely (and many more as a matter of fad) concerned about
endangered flora and fauna around us.
What bothers me, however, is that not too
many of us even bother to consider human kind as being a
significant element of the evolving ecology, leave alone being
concerned about its possible endangerment and extinction.
Extinction, primarily in functional terms
and then may be in physical terms too.
There is more and enough evidence of how
changing habitats (economic and otherwise) and frozen habits (egoic
need / fear driven) of some human kinds made them go
almost extinct, particularly post 9/11.
What are the ways we can be endangered?
Consider, for a while, that, your
colleague, sitting just next to you may very well be an exotic
species, threatening to be naturally selected by the
environment at the cost of your extinction? Though very
similar to you in physical and gross terms, (s)he may be a
more evolved being than you are.
The organizational environment (promoted
by inorganic mergers and acquisitions) most of us are exposed
to, in the current business context may also threaten our
survival as human beings. Notwithstanding the creature
comforts that they enable for their employees, most such
organizations are yet to do much to allay the feeling of
hollowness and fear that most of their associates get in touch
with, deep down, sometimes, in their being human.
To top it all are the overall
environmental pollutants like eroded values and all-pervasive
endemic diseases like corruption and crime.
Do we still remain in a state of
ostrich-like complacency, believing that we are much beyond
the ambit of evolution? Or we choose to share the concern and
sense of urgency of Ekhart Tolle:
The transformation of human consciousness is no longer a
luxury, so to speak, available to only a few isolated
individuals, but a necessity if humankind is not to destroy
itself.
At the present time, the dysfunction of the old
consciousness and the arising of the new are accelerating.
Paradoxically, things are getting worse and better at the same
time, although the worse is more apparent because it makes so
much noise.
Either way is there something we need to
/ can do to ensure that we evolve as human kind?
